Mac users get help establishing DSL service

(IDG) -- To serve Macintosh users looking for speedy Internet connections, a group of industry players on Tuesday launched MacDSL Center, a specialized Web.
The vendors behind MacDSL include digital subscriber line (DSL) provider Covad Communications; Netopia, a DSL Internet equipment maker; and Mac Publishing.

MacDSL, scheduled to premier at the MacWorld Expo show going on this week in San Francisco, is billed as a central location for finding DSL and Internet service providers deemed particularly friendly to Mac users.
The site will also allow Mac users to determine online whether DSL service is provided in their geographic area. Users can then order DSL service and equipment directly from the site.
MacDSL Center will also carry technical tips such as marrying Mac and PC architectures -- or Appletalk and TCP/IP -- through a DSL connection.

Technology issues such as setting up virtual private networks using Macs and DSL will also be provided, along with information on new Apple wireless and other products' relationship to DSL technology, officials said.
