Voter's VoiceAs the fall election season heats up, we're getting a lot of e-mail, many from Libertarians who want their nominee, author Harry Browne, included in the presidential debates. Here are some recent letters from readers. And if you have a comment on the days' events, a complaint or a suggestion about what you'd like to see on AllPolitics, send it to us at editor@AllPolitics.com "A Little Bizarre"On the news broadcast this morning, CNN reported that the special prosecutor was going to force Susan McDougal to testify for the prosecution in the Whitewater investigation. The special prosecutor has spent MILLIONS of dollars proving that James and Susan McDougal are liars. Now he wants them to testify for the prosecution! The special prosecutor seem willing to believe what the McDougals say if they say what he wants to hear. Truth is no longer a prerequisite? Am I the only one that thinks this a little bizarre? -- Chris Campbell "More Choices"The presidential debates are coming up soon. There will be a lot of people watching and listening who will base their vote on what they hear. These people want to "hear all sides" before making a choice and that is commendable. But one of the presidential candidates is missing from the debates, namely, Harry Browne! The Libertarian Party is on the ballot in all 50 states (for the second time) and so deserves to be included in any debate worthy of the name. Libertarians are the only party who fully support smaller government and their arguments should be heard along with those of the other parties. Please give more attention to the Libertarian Party in your coverage. While I am aware that your organization does not make the decision about who will be in the debates, you can help show that the Libertarian Party is the fastest growing third party, and these people want to see Harry Browne included. He has either won, or come in second in many Internet polls. Many people have heard of the Libertarian Party, but don't really know what it represents. If Harry Browne were in the debates, people could see that they have more choices. This is the way a democracy should work, with informed choice. -- Bruce E. Conner "Nothing For The Future"Bob Dole has nothing for the future. How can a man who is almost seventy years old understand, and in that matter, make correct decisions about the future of our country. I am twenty-two years old, and see what President Clinton referred to as a bridge to the past very destructive to the future of our nation. As for Dole's opinion that the National Guard should be used in the so called war on drugs, no way. I do not want millions of my tax dollars used on a war which is, first not being won, and secondly being fought outside of the United States, when the facts show that the majority of illegal drug production is manufactured, or produced right here at home. For Clinton's war on tobacco, I see the idea of the FDA regulation of tobacco as a starting point for a slow decriminalization of marijuana, which is needed for patients all across the country. So tobacco farmers don't fret for Clinton has a plan, and in a couple of years down the road be expecting to produce dank buds for everyone. -- Jim O'Brien "A Credible, Viable Party"When so many people I know are planning to vote half-heartedly for either Dole or Clinton as the lesser of two evils, I'm glad to be able to vote for a candidate that I can enthusiastically support, Harry Browne. Like many folks here in the South, I believe in the original principles of the Constitution. Unfortunately, I was "politically homeless" until I found the Libertarian Party. Why do the media ignore the Libertarians? A love of and respect for the founding principles is quite common here in the South, yet the only party that speaks of these things is consistently ignored. I would love to hear more about the Libertarian Party and their presidential candidate, Harry Browne. With few exceptions, when I tell others about the Libertarian Party and its ideas, they are at least interested and often excited. But they seem puzzled about why they've never heard about Libertarians in the news. The Libertarian Party is a credible, viable party, and it deserves to be heard. The Libertarian Party is the largest and fastest growing third party in America. It is 25 years old and is organized in every state of the union. The Libertarian Party is running over 200 candidates for U.S. Congress this year. (The Reform and Green parties -- who receive the bulk of the third party coverage, however -- only have a few.) Harry Browne, the Libertarian Party candidate will be on the ballot in all 50 states. This is the second presidential election in a row that the LP will have full ballot access, the only time this century that a third party has accomplished this feat. I hope you will give more attention in your coverage to the Libertarian Party. The American people deserve to know that a real alternative exists. -- Michael L. Probst, Montgomery, Ala. "American Assault On Iraq"I would like to express my concern about the latest American assault on Iraq. On what basis did the Americans carry out the attack? Which U.N. resolution did Saddam ignore? What international law did Saddam violate? Will someone please explain. The only violation I can see is that of the U.S. attack on Iraq which violates the international law of sovereignty (of) state. Let me remind you of some serious violations of international laws and U.N. resolutions which occurred this year without being (punished) or even condemned. Israel massacred more than 100 innocent civilians under U.N. protection and inside U.N. refugee camps in an area which was declared a safe haven. Everyone around the world witnessed the holocaust. It was deliberate and intentional; more than 17 shells slammed the refugee compound in less than five minutes at 100 percent accuracy is not a mistake. Let's assume that it was a mistake. Where is justice? What price did Israel pay? Nil The U.S. and the U.N. didn't even condemn Israel.... ...My concern is that Iraq is an exhausted nation and its population is starving to death. It's all because of the big bad boy Saddam, a single individual lunatic used as an image of (a) superpower capable of destructing our planet and is used by the United States to keep a foot in gulf region. This is a coward approach by the U.S. in punishing the whole of Iraq. If Saddam is a real devil, why is he still recognised as an international leader of Iraq?... -- Jamal Haragli "Sound Exactly Alike"I am writing to request you join with other members of the major media in calling for the inclusion of Libertarian presidential candidate Harry Browne in the upcoming debates. Ordinarily, I might have some sympathy for the inclusion of only the two major party candidates, but this year they have done nothing to merit such consideration. Indeed, they have gone out of their way to sound exactly alike! What this campaign needs is a true outsider with a sound and coherent political philosophy to challenge the assumptions of the others. And that is precisely what Harry Browne can provide. Mr. Browne would no doubt argue that the failed drug war must go the way of Prohibition and ask his famous question: "Would you give up your favorite federal program if it could mean the end of the IRS?" The country simply cannot go on the way it is now -- crime, taxes and deficits being only among the more obvious reasons why this is the case. Someone needs to challenge Clinton and Dole to tell the truth. Please give serious consideration to this issue -- and soon! -- in fulfilllment of your responsibilities and in the national interest. Thank you. -- Chuck Cavanaugh Voter's Voice Archives
