Campaign CoverageHere's some recent e-mail from AllPolitics readers. If you'd like to comment on the day's events or have a suggestion or complaint, send us e-mail at Editor@AllPolitics.com "More Ross Perot!"I would very much like to see more coverage of Ross Perot's campaign and the important issues like the balanced budget amendment, new tax systems being considered, health insurance/medicare reform, education, and what the Democrats and Republicans have in mind regarding these issues. All I have heard from them is the same old election-year rhetoric and finger-pointing which is getting us nowhere but deeper in debt. I'm a single working mother with two young children facing a grim future if we keep going at this rate. I'm interested in the issues that will affect me the most such as the ones mentioned above. Thanks for keeping us informed and updated on our world around us. Sincerely, -- Kelly Franz, Hurst, Texas "Has Her Silence Been Bought?"Ms. McDougal had three choices: 1. Testify before the Whitewater grand jury truthfully. 2. Lie to the grand jury. 3. Refuse to appear before the grand jury. By refusing to appear, she has chosen to spend time in jail rather than tell the truth. Is she terrified of the consequences if she testified truthfully, or has her silence been bought? I cannot think of any other possibilities. -- Thomas Watkins, Belleville, Ill. "Commercials As News"I remain confused as to why the news media, and CNN in particular, treat a paid commercial (Perot infomercial) as a news event. If a paid political advertisement constitutes news, then perhaps we should forget a presidential debate. A real debate with Democrat Bill Clinton, Republican Bob Dole, Reform Party mentor Ross Perot, and Libertarian candidate Harry Browne, (all on the ballots in 50 states) would finally focus the election on the issues. Still, despite the fact that 68 percent of Americans want to see this four-way debate, the coverage of the election has taken another turn for the worse -- coverage of commercials as news. Pity! -- Michael Hayes, Manhattan, Kan. "Disgrace To The American Justice System"The people who should really be going off to jail today are Kennneth Starr and his cronies. What they have done to Susan McDougal is a disgrace to the American justice system and someone should and must look into their covert actions. I hope it's the good folks at CNN. -- J. Rieger |
