Poll: New Hampshire Democrats lean toward GoreBy Keating Holland/CNN
January 13, 1999 MANCHESTER, N.H. (AllPolitics, January 13) -- As he is nationally, Vice President Al Gore remains the Democratic party's front-runner in New Hampshire, home of the first primary in the nation in 2000, according to a new CNN/WMUR/RKM poll. Also in this poll: If the primary were held tomorrow, 34 percent of all New Hampshire Democrats say they would vote for Gore. With all other potential candidates in the teens, putting Gore comfortably ahead of his rivals. Gore is also the best-known Democrat in the poll, and the most popular. House Democratic Leader Dick Gephardt (D-Missouri) is less known but nonetheless garners favorable reviews from a majority of New Hampshire Democrats. Former Sen. Bill Bradley of New Jersey and Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry each have favorable ratings of 43 percent, but while only 6 percent have an unfavorable view of Bradley, Kerry's unfavorable rating stands at 30 percent. Kerry's higher unfavorable rating may be due to the fact that he is a U.S. Senator from the neighboring state of Massachusetts, indicating that familiarity may be a mixed blessing for Kerry if he chooses to run. Nearly half of all New Hampshire Democrats have an unfavorable view of the Rev. Jesse Jackson. The corresponding CNN/WMUR/RKM poll of New Hampshire Republicans was released Tuesday and shows Texas Gov. George W. Bush and former Red Cross President Elizabeth Dole in a statistical dead heat for first. (Full poll) The survey of 537 registered Democrats in New Hampshire was conducted on January 8-11, 1999 and has a margin of sampling error of +/- four percentage points.
