CUTTING
EDGE
Come
Fly the Sleepy Skies
When British Airways asked Business Class passengers what they most wanted
on long haul flights, they did not answer "more of those little bags of
peanuts." They wanted beds. Big, comfy beds like those in First Class. A
$300-million investment later, they got them. From August, passengers on
BA's overnight flight from Hong Kong to London will be able to check in
and zonk out in a "lounge in the sky" with armchair recliners that convert
into a completely flat, 1.8-meter bed at the touch of a button. Gone are
the days of playing sardines with other passengers. The number of seats
in each cabin has been reduced to offer 30% more space to each passenger,
and regimented rows have been replaced by forward and rearward-facing pairs.
Screens can be pulled across to give yourself a little privacy if you're
traveling alone. Let's hope they also muffle the sound of your neighbor
snoring.
