Democrats take over the Senate

As the Senate was gaveled to order Wednesday, Sen. Tom Daschle, the soft-spoken but politically savvy South Dakota Democrat, was recognized as majority leader. With Daschle at the helm, the shift of power initiated by the decision of Sen. Jim Jeffords of Vermont become an independent is complete. It also marks the first time Democrats have controlled the Senate since January 1995, when Republicans took over after a remarkable sweep of the House and Senate in the 1994 midterm elections.
