Boston Massacre

(CNN) -- On March 5, 1770, British troops fired into a crowd outside the Customs Office in Boston, killing five colonials and injuring six others. The shooting went down in history as the Boston Massacre, an event that contributed to the start of the Revolutionary War.

A reenactment is held in the city every year at the corner of State and Devonshire streets, east of the Old State House. The site of the shooting is marked by an unassuming plaque that most visitors have difficulty finding.
