Hurricane Luis: alive and still causing trouble

[Tanker by hotel] ST. MAARTEN, Leeward Islands (CNN) -- At 7:30 p.m. EDT (2330 GMT) Hurricane Luis was moving northeasterly in the Atlantic. It was 225 miles west-northwest of Bermuda, with maximum sustained winds of 100 miles per hour. A tropical storm warning remained in effect for Bermuda. Gale wind warnings were in effect for the east coast of Nova Scotia.

The storm isn't expected to hit the United States but it is causing beach erosion from Florida to New York. Some coastal flooding is expected.

At least 14 people were killed when Luis hit the eastern Caribbean earlier this week. Authorities on the island of St. Martin said several dozen people were still missing.

Dogs and cats killed in preparation for Erin

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- Hurricane Erin meant the death penalty for scores of animals at an animal shelter in Dade County five weeks ago, even though the storm never hit the area. Officials at the animal shelter in the town of Medley said they killed 119 dogs and cats because they thought they would need plenty of room for pets displaced if the hurricane hit.

The shelter put to death 48 cats and 71 dogs on July 31. The hurricane bypassed Dade County and struck the Florida coast far to the north at Vero Beach.
